Subject: Emerging Left
Recap: Turning Left, Gears, MSPSL
Objective:

What: How to approach and emegre left from a minor into a major road safely

How: Look at the main points of emerging left and how the MSPSL routine should be applied, followed by on road practice.

By the end of the lesson: Be able to emerge left from a minor to a major road under full control and with due regard for other road users with little or no help from your instructor

Main Points:

Advance Info: Look for clues on the approach to help to identify the junction and plan ahead:
Look for signs
road markings (Give way / Stop). Asses if the junction is open / closed

Open: You have a good, early view into the junction on both sides, an early decision can be made whether to go or not (You must ALWAYS stop at a stop sign)

Closed: Your view is obstructed and you can't see into the junction clearly, be prepared to slow down or stop if necessary to find a safe gap

Hazard: Junctions are hazards, The MSPSL routine should be applied

irrors: Check speed / position of following vehicles - Interior and left mirrors

ignal: Tell other road users you intentions clearly and in good time

osition: Maintain a normal driving position (1m from the kerb) this confirms your intentions to turn and not park

peed: Reduce your speed on the approach - (Give way / Stop)  - (Open / Closed ) ?
Open (and Clear) - ensure a safe speed to make the turn under full control (2nd Gear)
Closed - Slow right down (1st Gear) Stop if necessary and prepare to move off

ook: Effective observation in all directions at the earliest point you can see clearly
Note: Ensure to look left for obstructions / traffic overtaking on your side of the road
Keep looking on the approach as you slow down, or stop if necessary to find a safe gap (you must not cause other road users to STOP, SLOW, or CHANGE DIRECTION)

Steering: Not tot early (you may clip the kerb) or too late (you may end up on the wrong side)
Don't swing out to the right before turning (you might move into other traffic)

After Turn: Check your mirrors and speed up if it's safe
